You May Feel It

Whoever does not understand these words
won’t understand the sound of a train pulling in
to the station, or the plaintive coo of lovesick doves,
the glad croaking of night frogs at the summer pond,
the broken roar of a wounded lion before going down,
the soft kiss of a passing breeze, its impersonal intent,
how some rivers leave dry beds of stones in their wake,
or the pure focus of a ravenous snake, the quivering rat
mesmerized by its terrible fierce gaze, the way tall corn
sounds, its dry restless rustle when the western wind
blows up suddenly and the sky darkens before noon,
or the subtle swoon of forest angels, that serene music
they create which you yourself are yet too loud to hear.

Yes Beloveds, gather near, I will say it succinctly,
my voice is clear, my will is certain, my strength
is the gift of relinquishment, of turning in place
while it all comes down in the no-time it takes
for the glory to shine, to reveal the mighty edifice
bequeathed to us before the mad flood that became
a ripple that changed to a bird that flew swift, flew
true, through many mansions our father prepared,
our home far away, our sweet and savory aviary.

This is the secret testament that includes all of that,
all of that will fit on the page, the page will tear off
and tumble down the street, it will sweep in circles
until it lands at your feet, you will pick it up but you
will not read, it is still too loud, I will soften it then,
I will change it into a clean cloth to wipe your face,
dry your tears, I will silently stand just out of sight,
you may feel it somehow, yes, you may already
know, in the midst of all this, I love you.
