Genesis

We stood in formation, encircling the globe
breathing in unison we inhaled the wet sky

as we exhaled life appeared for the first time
each life became a stone skipping over water

then rain fell, ripples spread out from each drop
they expanded into nothing, then stillness resumed

each skipped stone sank into a translucent silence
down below where the weather is always pleasant

having settled on the silty bottom it was all very good,
that’s when everything began the transformation dance

charged molecules of the sunk stones were so happy
they performed various tricks, biological miracles

then little wriggling fish emerged with similar smiles,
they discarded their magic bubbles to form vast colonies

each colony represented an epoch of forgotten beings,
beings that lived much like people tend to live today

perhaps regretful of the past, worried about the future,
the very future wriggling beings are occupying now

fishing about for the meaning of things, inventing
molecular gastronomy, building the vaunted mother

of all bombs, unconcerned about the melting permafrost,
just skipping stones down by the lake, day-dreaming
