In the Night In the Dark, Part 2

Fireflies gather at the edge of the night
grand scions of starfields shrunk down
to meander through a dreamy forest dusk
casting their intermittent light at each other
like children playing with flickering flashlights
camping for the first time by a summer lake
signaling luminous back-and-forth messages
just for the fun of it, enjoying no past, no future
the night is a playground but be careful, don’t run
the forest is kindly now but that can all change
in the blink of an eye, in a stumble and fall
you shouldn’t have left them without a word
now you’re alone, but the forest has eyes
and the sound, the sounds, the crackle and snaps
don’t lay there, get up, get up, trace your way back
before the last of the day’s dim light is gone
and you’re left by yourself, in the night,
in the dark
