Same Old

Woke up this morning with nothing on my mind.
Predictably, I didn’t have long to wait.

Soon the clown parade was noisily entering the tent,
mugging and somersaulting — a cacophony in my head.

Nevertheless, what once may have seemed a nuisance,
I see now as simply another innocent sign of life.

For a little while I was dead, now I breathe again.
Birth and death — a laughing clown stands juggling!

Listen, the band is encouraging you to get up and dance.
Don’t be shy, what do you have to lose anymore?

Make friends with the mind, otherwise
you’ll mistake the music for something it isn’t.

Mind is a numinous transpersonal conductor
waving the magical baton of imagination.

Here we are both creature and creator, enamored
of the metaphors which still can’t fully describe us.

It’s better not to get too close to knowing,
that’s a game mind will play if you fall for it.

Whatever is explained is not it, don’t be fooled!

If you blindly worship the imagination, however,
you might just drop through the trap door!

Look out below — there’s no below!

And if, as they say, “as above so below”,
just where will you hang that clown mask?

Every personality is a clown mask worn by emptiness
to amuse itself for a good time under the Big Top.

You (in the form of me) pluck one off an extended shelf
composed of thin air and try it on anyway, just for fun.

Remember, nothing can ever truly harm you.
Fear is merely a misuse of the imagination.

In the mirror, you notice nothing has changed.
Really, what did you expect?

You’re still the same old god you used to be,
even if you’re also still that very same old clown.

Put on the rest of your holy costume, go out
and make the frowning faces laugh.

While you’re at it, have some fun yourself!
