Dharma of Dog Care

Cutting through doubts, weak excuses, and copious incense,
his odor indicates that it’s time to bathe the dog.

In order to efficiently resolve the basic state of reality,
a bucket of warm soapy water and a medium-bristle brush
will provide a good start, but the effort must be genuine.

Lying awake in bed in the morning, pondering his bath,
there may be some recognition of the nature of mind.

This will not get the dog washed.

Mind has neither form nor color, neither center nor boundary.
It has no beginning, no dwelling place, and no destination.

What can we say about this emptiness that would be helpful?
It is clear and cognizant, but these words are merely entertainment.

They will not get the dog washed.

When this is seen and recognized, the actual nature of things
may be understood: there is no way around the dog bath.

The wise approach would be to take bathing the dog as the path.
This is easy to realize because there is no other option.

The nature of mind does not consist of a concrete perceiver
or something perceived to fixate on and identify with.

Because it defies the limitations of permanence and annihilation,
and within it there is no thing to awaken, one might imagine
any number of reasons to postpone the chore.

This will not get the dog washed.

Even though awareness is naturally pure,
and even if there is no practice to carry out,
still – something must be done.

Regardless of any reluctance I may happen to feel, based upon
an inherent laziness, I can look into that habitual impediment
and it will quiescently subside without remainder (maybe).

When I understand the view in this way and want to apply it
in my experience, the way is simple and straightforward:

Just wash the dog.
