The Five Curtains

Behind the first curtain were all the people I had ever known.
They were milling about, trying to determine the connection.
When I entered the room, there was a collective “Aha!”

Behind the next curtain was an empty room.
I just wanted to go in and forget all about the last life.
Sometimes being left alone can be a gracious mercy.

Behind the third curtain was a foretaste of what’s to come.
I couldn’t make out what it was, since it hadn’t happened yet.
Instead of being curious, I just felt a weary kind of resolve.

The next curtain opened slowly, revealing a clear light.
It was so alluring, I really wanted to fly right into it.
Maybe this was the heaven I’d heard all about.

I began to float up, as if in a magician’s stage trick,
but rather than merging with the lovely light,
I passed instead through a fifth curtain.

Waiting there were all the people I would meet in my next life.
They were milling about in a kind of party atmosphere.
Some seemed familiar, though I couldn’t place them.

As I entered and proceeded to drop down to the floor,
everyone stopped for a moment, looked over at me,
and then the party resumed as before.
