Don’t Forget To Vote

A man enters the voting booth, closes the curtains,
and begins to examine the various choices on the ballot.

After a few moments, he falls asleep standing up,
and dreams that he has slipped off a mountain cliff.

Rather than dropping according to the law of gravity,
he finds himself slowly ascending, drawn up into the sky.

The voting booth is forgotten, as are the candidates
and all the various issues which seemed so important.

Below him, the planet is revolving in perfect harmony,
and lovely white clouds are streaming over blue oceans.

He remembers now why he came here, why he took birth
on Earth — it just seemed so utterly beautiful from above!

When he awakens, he finds himself still standing
in a voting booth, and instantly he makes his choice:
he leaves the booth, walks outside into the sunlight.

As if he has just realized it, he exclaims to himself,
“It’s good to be alive!” and then starts to laugh
for the first time that day.
