At the Vineyard

there is a miracle of bliss
in this Heart’s embrace
that we try to say
but cannot.
If we did,
ancient enemies
might sleepily awaken
in each other’s wrapped arms,
not sure of how they got there,
but delighted beyond any words
with such amazing new sensations!
We paint luminescent water worlds
afloat in the dark velvet light, conjure
metaphors and clever similes for what is
essentially indescribable, or tell of a child
seen walking in the vineyards one morning
misty with auspicious signs, while a strangely
familiar music wafted softly out of nowhere –
how it wrapped deliciously around our loving there,
and we can almost say it now, but we know
we never can, we never can . . .
Later, at the live oak grove adjacent
to the vineyard, a soft afternoon slant
of honeyed sunlight streamed whispers
on the wind, and while intermittent bird song
forged harmonies of agreement, I sat watching,
on a little wooden bench, as you explored
odd rocks, barks, leaves, and mosses . . .
Is there any other paradise than this?
Sun setting in the valley,
and as we stroll back to the car
along plowed paths between the rows
of budding grape vines, your loving arm
on my shoulder, my hand in the back pocket
of your denim jeans, both of us busy,
silently composing some great lines,
I suddenly stop, pull you closer,
gaze into your eyes and gasp –
your smile outshines
the sky!
