In the Dream

In the dream it is late, and I am traveling
over the deep waters, so I listen carefully.

There are many toll booths behind me,
but this road I’m driving never seems to end.

Still, there is a kind of mercy in these wheels,
and in the sky, a brilliant full moon tonight.

The music my heart makes moves me in a way
no sound from any instrument ever could.

In my heart, it is all true, everything is true –
how could I have ever doubted that melody?

The more I listen, the more true it all appears,
until the trueness of it all forms its own sound.

It starts as a kind of mantra, a rolling prayer
that renders all my midnight musings moot.

Everything I sought to know is streaming out
in all directions, but I cannot grasp any of it.

Its sound is too pure, too true for any lyric,
as if my words would shatter this dream,
though there is only dreaming.

There is a natural pulse to the dream, a rhythm
of dreaming — the heart dances in its own place.

The sound it makes hints at wonders, joys,
curiosity, youth, flight, foolishness –
just loving this – what is.

It is not a thought, not a movement of mind,
nothing that begins and ends, though all
that is and was will cease to be.

Could anything ever be that free,
could any dream be this real?

In no time at all, dawn begins to exude
the fragrance of morning across the sky.

The irresistible perfume of light reaches me
and ignites a new dream within the dream.

In the dream it is early, and I am traveling
over the deep waters, so I listen carefully.

There are many toll booths behind me,
but this road I’m driving never seems to end.
